- Shut Down Toxic E-Waste Prison Sweatshops
Some of the most dangerous and poisonous dismantling of electronic waste takes place in American prisons. There, inmates smash apart computer monitors without adequate protection from the glass or respirators to keep the toxic dust from their lungs. Inmates have reported illness, respiratory problems, and skin rashes. Prison employees are also exposed and take away contaminants home with them on their clothes and skin, further exposing their families. The winner in all this is the public corporation UNICOR, operated under the Dept. of Justice, which uses captive prison labor in a range of industries, including dismantling of e-waste. By paying workers as little as 23 cents per hour, UNICOR undercuts viable recycling companies who ARE protecting their workers. |
Tell the EPA to Stop the Export of Electronic Waste
Most countries have joined an international treaty (called the Basel Convention)that makes it illegal for exporters in developed countries to ship non-working, toxic laden products to underdeveloped countries such as Nigeria. But our government refuses to ratify the Basel Convention and the Basel Ban Amendment and the EPA works aggressively to set very low standards for export of the electronic waste. Tell the EPA to Stop the Export of Electronic Waste Now!
